BEST THINGS TO DO IN VANG VIENG, LAOS (TRAVEL GUIDE)

Located in the north of Laos, Vang Vieng is a small town surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains and rice fields, with the Nam Song River running through it. This setting is, without question, one of the most beautiful in the country.

Vang Vieng is probably one of the places everyone hears about when planning a trip to Laos. It has built a strong reputation over the years, often linked to backpacking, parties, and a certain chaotic energy. But that is only one side of the story.

Over time, the destination has evolved. Today, it offers much more than its old image, with a mix of nature, adventure, and slower, more curated experiences.

In this guide to the best things to do in Vang Vieng, I share what is actually worth your time, based on my experience. From iconic activities to more relaxed moments, this is how I explored Vang Vieng beyond the clichés.

In This Guide:

IS VANG VIENG IN LAOS REALLY WORTH VISITING?

Vang Vieng does not have the best reputation: many travellers describe it as overcrowded, not very pretty, and too focused on the backpacking culture. And to be fair, that can be true. If you experience Vang Vieng as a strict backpacker, you will likely notice the downsides. But I think that the destination is misunderstood: when you shift your experience slightly, everything changes.

Staying in a peaceful area, choosing quieter activities, and slowing down your pace make a huge difference. This is exactly how I experienced it, and it felt calm, scenic, and genuinely enjoyable.

So, is Vang Vieng worth visiting? Yes: but only if you approach it the right way.

Before getting into the list of best things to do in Vang Vieng, there is one thing worth noting: Vang Vieng is not a place that you ‘visit’ in the traditional sense. You don’t come here for landmarks or cultural highlights. You come for experiences, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature.

Here are the best things to do in Vang Vieng, based on what I tried and what I would genuinely recommend.

1 – GO HIKING TO THE BEST VIEWPOINTS IN VANG VIENG

Surrounded by dramatic and beautiful mountains, Vang Vieng offers some of the most impressive viewpoints in Laos. From the top, you get wide open views over the valley, rice fields, and limestone formations that define the landscape. Most viewpoints come with a photo setup at the summit, adding a playful touch to your photos whether it is a motorbike, a plane, or something more unexpected.

I tried two of the numerous viewpoints in Vang Vieng, which I have listed below.

1 – Phapoungkham Viewpoint: Plane & Unicorn Viewpoints

This is my favourite viewpoint, and the one I would recommend first. It takes around 20 minutes to reach the viewpoint, and about 30 minutes for the round trip. The climb is a bit rough; but the view at the top is absolutely worth it. Halfway through the hike, you can choose to turn left towards the airplane viewpoint, or right towards the unicorn viewpoint, which offers yet another angle on the valley.

No matter which viewpoint you choose, the effort of the hike is completely worth it. The views are stunning, with a full panorama over the valley and surrounding mountains. It also feels very peaceful up there, with very little crowd. At some point, I was there all by myself. I recommend doing this hike for sunset, for the best views and light.

2 – Nam Xay Viewpoint: Motorbike Viewpoint

Nam Xay is the most famous viewpoint in Vang Vieng – consequently the most crowded. It is also the most crowded and photographed.

The hike itself is relatively short but not so easy. It takes around 30 minutes to go up, and about 45 minutes round trip. Some sections are steep and require using your hands, especially near the top. Good shoes are essential, as the slope can be very slippery.  At the top, you will also find the well-known motorbike placed there for photos. It looks great but be prepared to wait, as there is often a queue for it.

The view itself is beautiful, with a wide panorama over the valley and karst mountains. One detail I really like is how the viewpoints face each other. From Nam Xay viewpoint, you can actually see Phapounghkam viewpoint, and vice versa.

After doing the hike for sunset and seeing the crowd, I would recommend  trying it for sunrise, where we can expect fewer crowds.

3 – Other Viewpoints

If you like hiking and want to dedicate more time to it during your stay in Vang Vieng, you could also try some other viewpoints: Pha Ngern Silver Cliff View Point, Silver Cliff Viewpoint (Pha Ngeun), and Big Pha Ngern View Point Top.

Practical Information | The entrance fee for these viewpoints is usually around 30,000 KIP per person (approx. $1.4 at the time of writing). Payable in cash only. They open daily from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm (last entry). There is also the possibility to buy drinks at the entrance before starting the hike.

2 – TAKE A HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE

Hot air ballooning is one of the most iconic activities in Vang Vieng. It is also what makes this destination quite unique, as it is known to be one of the cheapest places in the world to experience it. For around $100, you can spend about 40 minutes in the air, which is significantly lower than in most other countries, where prices usually range between $200 and $300.

Flying over Vang Vieng is undeniably beautiful, with the karst mountains stretching in every direction and the Nam Xong River running through the valley.

That said, one detail stood out to me. The flight actually starts after sunrise, which means you miss the soft early light that usually makes these moments feel more special. The views are still stunning, but the light is slightly harsher than what you might expect. For that reason, I would recommend doing this activity at sunset rather than sunrise. I also noticed there were more balloons in the air at sunset, which makes the views even better, especially if you enjoy photography.

Overall, I would say it is worth doing the activity if it is your first hot air balloon experience, or if you want to try it at a more affordable price. If you have already done it elsewhere, it might feel a little less memorable in comparison. One small difference worth noting: unlike in many other destinations, there is no post-flight celebration or certificate after the ride.

Sunrise or Sunset Hot Air Balloon  | Cost: $105 per person – excluding breakfast served on site after the tour.  Meeting Point: pick up at 05:30 am from accommodation. Booked through accommodation. Note: for a higher price, you can include breakfast.

3 – FLY OVER VANG VIENG WITH A PARAMOTOR

Paramotoring is one of the most unique experiences you can have in Vang Vieng, and it has quickly become one of the destination’s signature activities.

If you have never seen it before, it is essentially a powered paraglider that takes off from the ground and flies low over the landscape. In Vang Vieng, this means gliding above rice fields, rivers, and dramatic karst mountains, with an open and unobstructed view of the entire valley.

Compared to a hot air balloon; the experience feels much more dynamic and immersive. You fly closer to the ground, move more freely, and get a stronger sense of the scale of the landscape around you. Flights usually take place at sunrise and sunset, when the light is softer and the scenery looks its best.

It is also worth knowing that paramotors are very present in Vang Vieng, so you will likely hear them quite often, especially during those times of the day.

Paramotor Practical Information  | Count around $40 per person, for a 15 minute experience. Can be booked through accommodation.

4 – WATCH THE SUNSET WITH A DRINK

One of the simplest but most enjoyable things to do in Vang Vieng is to end the day with a drink while watching the sun set behind the mountains.

Because the landscape around Vang Vieng is so dramatic, even a casual drink can turn into a memorable moment once the light starts changing. The whole valley takes on a different atmosphere. So, if you are not in the mood for another hike but still want to enjoy the scenery, this is one of the best ways to experience Vang Vieng at golden hour.

If you want to experience valley views from a bar, I recommend heading to the area across the Nam Xong (or Namsong) Bridge. After crossing the bridge, head west towards the Google Maps location Vang Vieng View, where you will reach an open field overlooking the valley, with a few bars scattered around. The wide open field photos featured in this article were taken at GPS coordinates 18,92020° N, 102,43680° E, next to which there are two or three bars with a perfect view to enjoy a drink or snack.

Otherwise, several bars and restaurants along the river offer excellent sunset views, making this an easy activity to fit into your itinerary, even on a relaxed day. And if you stay at a well-located hotel such as Riverside Boutique Resort where I stayed a few nights, you can also enjoy beautiful sunset views from the outdoor restaurant or pool.

5 – STAY (OR HAVE A DRINK) AT VIENGTARA VANG VIENG RESORT

Ok. This was the highlight of my stay at Vang Vieng, and I can’t stop thinking about this place.

One of the most iconic stays in Vang Vieng is undoubtedly ViengTara Vang Vieng Resort. Set in the middle of rice fields with direct views of the surrounding karst mountains, it is one of the most beautiful properties in the area. The setting feels peaceful, scenic, and completely removed from the busier parts of town.

Staying there is an experience I highly recommend as you will feel like you are in another world. Room rates start at approx $100. If your budget allows, staying here can completely change how you experience Vang Vieng. If not, it is still worth stopping by for a drink or meal to enjoy the view, as they accept outside guests for the food and beverage offering. If you only go for food and drinks, I recommend visiting at sunset, as you will enjoy views of the mountains with hot air balloon and parameters in the sky. Very scenic.

6 – RELAX AT ONE OF VANG VIENG’S BLUE LAGOONS

One of the most popular things to do in Vang Vieng is to spend a few hours relaxing at one of its famous lagoons. There are several around Vang Vieng, and while they all share the same concept, the experience can vary quite a lot depending on which one you choose.

There are five open-air blue lagoons (Blue Lagoon 6 is closed), where it is possible to swim, relax, or even zipline.

In my opinion, Blue Lagoon 1 and 2 are best avoided if you are looking for a more peaceful atmosphere, as they tend to be the most crowded.Instead, I would recommend heading to Blue Lagoon 3 or 4, which generally feel more enjoyable and less chaotic.

The photos in this article were taken at Blue Lagoon 3, which I personally thought offered a nice setting. A good way to plan your day is to combine it with a nearby hike, as both Nam Xay Viewpoint and Phapoungkham are located not far from Blue Lagoon 3. If you want to avoid crowds, the best time to go is in the morning. During the day, the lagoon itself is not overly crowded in the water, however the surrounding leisure area can be much busier; with plenty of people at the bar, and lounging area.

Practical Information | The entrance fee for these lagoons is usually around 30,000 KIP per person (approx. $1.4 at the time of writing). Payable in cash only.

7 – GO KAYAKING ON THE NAM SONG RIVER

Kayaking on the Nam Xong (or Namsong) River is one of the classic outdoor activities in Vang Vieng, and an easy way to enjoy the scenery from a different perspective. It is not the most unique activity on this list, but it remains a pleasant way to spend a few hours if you want to experience the landscape without hiking or flying above it.

Most tours include transport upstream before letting you kayak back down towards town, with routes and durations varying depending on the operator.

For a more enjoyable experience, I would recommend going earlier or later in the day, when the temperatures are lower and the light is softer.

8 – EXPLORE VANG VIENG BY BIKE

While many travellers choose to explore Vang Vieng by motorbike, cycling  is a great alternative if you prefer a slower and more relaxed pace, or if you are not comfortable riding a motorcycle (like me!).

The roads around town are mostly flat, and many scenic spots can be reached easily by bike, especially if you are not planning to go far. Riding through the rice fields and rural roads surrounding Vang Vieng is, in itself, part of the experience.

Many hotels and resorts offer bicycles for free, making this one of the easiest ways to get around if you do not want to rent a scooter.

Just keep in mind that the heat can get intense in the middle of the day, so early mornings and late afternoons are the most pleasant times to ride.

9 – BOOK A SPA OR MASSAGE

After a few days of hiking, kayaking, or exploring under the Lao heat, booking a massage or spa treatment is one of the easiest ways to slow down and recover. Generally speaking, while travelling in Asia, I always see massage as a must-do activity as the options are endless and very good.

Vang Vieng has plenty of massage parlours and wellness spots, ranging from simple local places to more refined spa settings inside hotels and resorts. Prices remain very affordable compared to many other destinations worldwide, which makes it easy to fit a treatment into your itinerary.

10 – OTHER THINGS TO DO IN VANG VIENG

Beyond the activities listed above, there are several other things to do in Vang Vieng that may suit different travel styles, even though they were not personally part of my itinerary.

Many travellers choose to explore the area by motorbike, which gives more access to remote spots. However, if you are not comfortable driving one, it is absolutely possible to enjoy Vang Vieng without it.

Cave visits are also popular in Vang Vieng, with several caves scattered around the surrounding countryside. There is also a cave along the on the Phapoungkham hike. That said, this is not something I personally prioritise during my trips.

You will also find a few temples in and around town. While they can be worth a quick stop, I would personally recommend focusing your cultural visits in Luang Prabang instead, where the temple experience feels far more memorable.

As always, what is “worth it” depends on your travel style. These simply were not the experiences I chose to prioritise during my time in Vang Vieng.

WHERE TO STAY IN VANG VIENG

Where you stay can make a huge difference in how you experience Vang Vieng.  If you stay in the center of town, you will be closer to restaurants, bars, and transport options. However, that also means a busier and less scenic environment.

For a more peaceful and elevated experience, I would recommend staying slightly outside the center, surrounded by nature, or with nice views of the Nam Xong River. I spent a few nights at Riverside Boutique Resort resort and the experience was flawless. View in the mountains, nice pool, and special mention to the spa experience.

My personal favorite is ViengTara Vang Vieng Resort, which offers one of the most beautiful settings in the area, with rice fields and mountain views all around. Staying there completely changes the atmosphere of your trip and makes Vang Vieng feel far more relaxing.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION ABOUT VANG VIENG

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED IN VANG VIENG

To avoid rushing, I would recommend staying in Vang Vieng for three to four days. As you may have noticed in this article, I recommend that many of the activities be done at sunset. You don’t have to do all of them, but if you pick a few and want to organise your itinerary properly, you will need to make sure you have enough evenings available. If you feel like you may have mornings or afternoons without activities, consider staying in a nice resort where the day can be spent relaxing by the pool.

HOW TO GET AROUND IN VANG VIENG

Getting around in Vang Vieng is relatively easy, and you do not necessarily need a motorbike to enjoy the area.

If you are arriving by train, you will most likely reach Vang Vieng through the railway station located outside town. From there, many accommodations can arrange a private van pick-up, although this tends to be the most expensive option and can cost around $20 despite the short distance. A tuk tuk transfer is usually more affordable and often costs under $10. If you want to save money, public shared minibuses are also available outside the station and typically charge around 30,000 to 40,000 KIP per person (approx. $1.4 to $1.8 at the time of writing), to drop you directly at your accommodation.

Once in town, many places can be reached by bicycle or on foot. Many hotels provide bicycles for free or for a small fee. For spots that are farther away, tuk-tuks are widely available and can be arranged easily through your hotel. To give you an idea, booking a tuk-tuk with the hotel to go to Blue Lagoon 3, Phapounghkam view point then Nam Xay viewpoint for around half a day cost 700,000 KIP (approx $32 at the time of writing).

Motorbike rental remains the most flexible option if you are comfortable driving one, and can be quite affordable.

If you book activities like hot air balloon or paramotor, you will usually be picked up and then dropped off at your accommodation.

Overall, Vang Vieng is compact enough that getting around rarely becomes a challenge; regardless of your preferred transport style.

BEST TIME TO VISIT VANG VIENG

The dry season, from November to April, generally offers the best weather for outdoor activities and clear views. That said, because Vang Vieng is a popular backpacker destination, I would suggest visiting at the beginning or end of the season if possible, as you will likely encounter fewer crowds. You may also benefit from better deals and potential room upgrades , especially at more upscale properties.
